Papua New Guinea through political direction just begun the STEM agenda in 2020 or earlier with the belief that STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) skills are crucial to innovation and development in our contemporary economy since STEM is being positioned so centrally to a country’s competitiveness.

Our education system needs to be transformed to produce a generation with creative minds who will be creators of new technologies, inventors, real-world problem solvers, innovators to be competitive on the global economy.

Government and private organizations worldwide have drawn attention to the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) learning problem or the STEM agenda and how to improve STEM Learning. A country needs a workforce with STEM skills to drive economic prosperity. However, it is evident that our education system is not up to the challenge. What will it take in improving STEM learning in Papua New Guinea? What is our current thinking in STEM education?

There are concerns that we do not have sufficient teachers who are qualified to teach STEM subjects. Government and industry should partner to provide support for improvement in STEM education, but this raises the question of where to invest in programs to stimulate change. Introduction

STEM Educational Resources and Training is a business focused on empowering the next generation. Founded by Malachai Nathaniel in March 2025, STEM Educational Resources and Training is dedicated to revolutionizing the education landscape in Papua New Guinea.

Malachai Nathaniel completed his Postgraduate Certificate in STEM Education with QUT in 2020 through the Australia Awards Short Courses. As part of his course integration plan and recognizing the knowledge gap in the education system, Malachai has developed STEM educational resources on various important topics that are essential for teachers at all levels of education, including primary, elementary, secondary, schools of excellence or national high schools as they were previously called, including teacher training institutions.

Despite strong support through policy documents such as the National School of Excellence Policy (2020), the National Curriculum Standards Framework (2018) and the Standards-Based Curricula (SBC), the development of STEM Education Textbooks addresses some of the knowledge gap in the education system. The development of the STEM Textbooks is an integrated STEM approach to embrace effective implementation of the SBC and STEM curriculum and raise education standards to be competitive on the global economy.

Teachers at all levels of education can use these STEM textbook as a resource material to implement STEM Curriculum and Standards-Based Curriculum and the STEM Education concepts captured within the SBC curriculum standards.

In recent years, Governments of nations across the world have placed a particular emphasis on improving the quality of education in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEM). This reflects the critical importance of STEM disciplines for modern society. STEM education is necessary to drive our economic ambitions, support innovation and provide the foundations for future prosperity. Knowledge- based economies are particularly dependent on the quality and quantity of STEM graduates.

Providing STEM Education of highest quality is essential if Papua New Guinea is to deliver its ambitions to be a hub of technological creativity and an innovation leader in the near future.
